An international human rights group backs the Filipina worker in Taiwan critical of President Rodrigo Duterte, and called on the Philippine government to stop its “repressive campaign against freedom of expression.”
— Amnesty International Philippines condemned the government’s threats against the Filipina worker in Taiwan critical of President Rodrigo Duterte, saying the administration’s “alarming move” undermines freedom of speech.against the caregiver, who is now under investigation for cyberlibel.
The law, which grants the President special powers to address the COVID-19 pandemic, also penalizes those who create or perpetuate false information amid the coronavirus pandemic. According to the human rights group, the State is using the said law to silence those who speak up against the administration “through its use of the vaguely worded and overbroad provision” against fake news.
Amnesty International Philippines also commended those who continue to be critical “despite authorities’ relentless and unjustified measures to mute dissent."
