With TikTok’s future in doubt, Instagram is moving quickly to slow its surging competitor and plans to roll out its own short-form video function, Reels, in America in early August.

Reels has been available in Brazil since November and over the last few weeks was added in France, Germany—and India, shortly after that country banned Chinese-owned TikTok amid a feud with China. The app’s disappearance in India has prompted TikTokers there to migrate to other platforms, including Reels and others like Byte and Dubsmash. In America, reports that the U.S.

Details about Reels remain scarce, but Instagram says that users will be able to share the videos with their friends and, importantly, Reels videos will flow into Instgram’s Explore tab, an attempt to duplicate TikTok’s For You Page. The For You Page is the first thing you see on TikTok, and it sources videos based on what the app knows about your interests, funneling different types of content into the feed.
