EXCLUSIVE: After a difficult few months for the Princess of Wales, a leading royal expert examines how she will be feeling ahead of the family's break for the Easter holidays
They say that history repeats itself, first as tragedy, second as farce but for the Royal household, and the Prince and Princess of Wales in particular, the past few days have been anything but amusing.
“William will have shown nothing but support and kindness to Kate after this latest setback,” former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond tells OK!” Jennie says that both William’s - and Harry’s - overriding determination to protect the privacy of family life stems from their troubled childhood. “We have to remember that they watched their mother being relentlessly pursued. They would certainly concur with their uncle’s view expressed so forcefully at her funeral that Diana - ‘a girl given the name of the ancient goddess of hunting was, in the end, the most hunted person of the modern age.
“She will be shaken that such a well meaning gesture - and what would seem to be a totally innocent gesture - has placed her in such a scrutinous public opinion court of law. I think she’s probably a bit disappointed and will have lost a bit of confidence. The image was soon picked apart, with it becoming clear the photo had been altered - Princess Charlotte’s left hand did not match up with the sleeve of her jumper, Kate’s zipper was misaligned, and some body parts were blurred. Rather than be the first step back, almost immediately, speculation about the princess’s condition reached a fever pitch.
“Her grandfather was a very good photographer,” says Claudia Acott Williams, curator of the Life Through A Royal Lens exhibition at Kensington Palace. “When she was a child, he would show her his slides. It was him who taught her how to take photographs.” "But she apologised quickly, and that should have been the end of it. Sadly, we live in a world of absurd and often vicious social media comments. All of it unsourced, much of it mere tittle tattle, some of it unbelievably offensive. And so the conspiracy theorists went to town.
"In future, I suppose the relatively new convention that Kate issues pictures of her children taken by herself – in order to make things a little easier for the kids – may have to change. That will please the newspapers’ official photographers who always, understandably, resent having unverified photos simply issued to the picture desks.”
