Ali Jennings’s ailing left ankle and Grant Wells’s ankle discomfort are among the injuries the Hokies must contend with ahead of Saturday’s game at Rutgers.
When the Virginia Tech football team steps onto the field for its first road game of the season Saturday afternoon against Rutgers, the lineup stands to look considerably different than the first two weeks. The reason for the potential shakeup stems from a rash of injuries that befell the Hokies in this past Saturday’s loss to Purdue, 24-17, at Lane Stadium.Among the most concerning for Coach Brent Pry is wide receiver Ali Jennings’s ailing left ankle.
“Yeah, he’s out this week, and then we’ll evaluate it as we go,” Pry said Tuesday during his weekly media availability, adding he is uncertain if the injury is long term. “I don’t know that yet. He’s out this week, which is unfortunate, to only have him for two plays of the game after the game he had opening week, but we’ll have to continue to evaluate his situation.”Jennings had 72 yards and two touchdowns on five receptions against his former team in the season opener Sept.
Wells is listed first on the depth chart, although Pry indicated how well he moves during practice will determine whether he starts or if Drones gets his first crack as a starter. The redshirt sophomore transfer from Baylor pushed Wells for the starting job in fall camp, and Pry has maintained he would play regularly this season for developmental purposes.“I think in the offensive package there’s more that can give people problems that we’ve invested in,” Pry said.
Potentially compromising the passing attack further is a sore hamstring Lane has been nursing this week. The senior transfer from Middle Tennessee hurt his hamstring against Purdue but managed five catches for 54 yards, including a two-yard touchdown reception from Wells with 10 seconds left in the first half.Virginia Tech did not score in the second half. The defense held up, although it yielded the winning touchdown on a two-yard run with eight minutes left in the fourth quarter.
