A novel lung MRI technique using inhaled perfluoropropane gas shows promise in identifying damaged lung regions in patients with asthma, COPD, and lung transplant recipients. Called dynamic fluorine 19-MRI (19F-MRI), this method allows for earlier evaluation of lung function and regional defects compared to existing techniques. The technique's accessibility and ability to capture subtle regional changes make it a valuable tool for monitoring lung health and disease progression.
An investigative lung MRI that uses inhaled perfluoropropane gas has demonstrated an ability to identify damaged regions of the lung in patients with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease as well as lung transplant recipients, two recently published studies reported.
The asthma and COPD study found an average 19F-MRI–derived ventilation defect percentage of 1.8% in healthy patients vs 8.3% for those with asthma and 27.2% for patients with COPD. After bronchodilator administration, the patients with asthma had a 33% reduction in average VDP, and patients with COPD had a 14% reduction.
“These are people who went through a really tough medical journey, where the healthcare costs are very high, and after lung transplantation, 40% of the people die after 5 years, which is actually not a great outlook, and anything you can do in that time to manage a transplant recipient’s healthcare journey and minimize degradation of the lung, that can have a huge impact on patient outcome,” Thelwall said.
