The national average price for a gallon of regular gas continued to increase Tuesday, rising to $3.068. This is more expensive than a month ago, when a gallon cost $3.02, and approximately one cent cheaper than a year ago, when regular gas was $3.079 per gallon., when the national average cost for a gallon of regular gas fell to $3.01 in December. Yet, despite the increases,have fallen considerably, particularly compared to the spring and early summer of 2024.
Since President Joe Biden began his term, the price of gas has been an important matter for people in the country who were forced to spend considerably more than when President-elect Donald Trump was in office. In June 2021, less than six months after Biden’s inauguration, gas prices soared to over $4 per gallon. After rising to the highest national average price in the country’s history in 2022, gas prices started to decrease.
Prices would continue to fluctuate over the next two years. Then, after setting a high for the year in April 2024, the cost of a gallon of gas began to decline gradually starting in May. As of today, Jan. 7, the national average price for a gallon of regular gas is more expensive than at any time during Trump’s term between Jan. 2017 and Jan. 2020.
While the current national average price for regular gas is $3.068, costs vary across the country, depending on the state. Prices range from $2.56 to $4.54 per gallon.Similar to the rest of the country, the cost of gas for areas in and around Washington, D.C., differs. The one constant among them is that most areas exceed the national average gas cost.Maryland
is also higher than the national average with a current cost of $3.137 per gallon, the most expensive among the states around the nation’s capital.
