We've had our first taste of driving the new Ineos Grenadier - thrashing it off-road in an iron mine ⛏
► Grenadier driven off-road in tough conditionsWith the Ineos Grenadier due to reach its first buyers this summer, we've driven a pre-production version on a tough off-road course close to the factory in France where the big 4x4 will soon be built.
You climb up into great Recaro seats, which are both supportive and super comfy. In answer to everyone's first question, namely 'Is there anywhere to put my elbow?', the answer is a resounding 'yes'. Your arm naturally comes to rest, comfortably, on the top of the door. There's space in here, and the ergonomics are sound.
The turning circle is usefully tight, but beyond that it's hard to pass judgement on the steering – that's more of a job for an on-road test. Braking was easy to apply with accuracy, but again it's the on-road performance that matters more. But we brake admirably late for the first right-hander and go in tyres squealing. At once we're impressed with the Grenadier's poise and its responsiveness under duress. There's far less bodyroll than you might expect given the car's all-terrain remit and ladder chassis and, as Davies works the wheel and throttle pedal, it's clear the Ineos is happy to respond to his inputs even as we howl through the first corner.
