Christian Brothers and Union Catholic came out on top in Non-Public A for another year after Friday's action in Toms River.
Updated: Feb. 21, 2026, 9:46 a.m.The boys non-public A & B indoor track championships at the Rothman Orthopaedic Sports Complex in Toms River, NJ on Friday, February 20, 2026.Christian Brothers cemented its dominance once again, capturing a third straight Non-Public A championship with a commanding team performance.
The Colts piled up 112 points—more than doubling runner‑up St. Peter’s Prep, which finished with 45—to secure not only their three‑peat, but the program’s 28th state title. That total extends CBA’s lead as the winningest track and field program in N.J. history. “This is a big deal for us”, said Head Coach Karl Torchia. “Winning a state championship is hard every year and this is our 28th overall for indoor, so it’s nice to do it for the seniors in their last time in the bubble”.Senior Luke Hnatt delivered a standout double, opening his day with a victory in the 1,600 meters in 4:20.83 before returning to close the meet with a record-breaking run in the 3,200. The Virginia commit crossed in 9:10, eclipsing the meet record of 9:14 held by Gil St. Bernard’s legend Doug Smith since 2008. Hnatt’s time also stands as the fastest in N.J. this season. “In the 1600, I was just going out thereI didn’t really care about time”, said Hnatt afterwards. “I never really care about time to be honest, I just want to win stuff, so for that race I went out easy and I knew my teammates were with me and I got the win, so I can’t complain about that and It was the same with the 3,200″. “I just love the race, so I was so happy when my coach texted me and said that I was gonna double Friday”, added Hnatt. I was so happy because I want to take any opportunity I can to get out race and get some wins under my belt, so it was a lot of fun and im really happy with how things went today". After winning the Meet of Champions title in cross‑country, he now sets his sights on adding another M of C crown to his résumé. “I’m really confident now after today because I didn’t really get the race that much this season”, Hnatt said. “This is my first one of my first races of the season, I had the 3k last week, but this was my first race in-state and open race, so it was really fun to get out here, and I’m really excited for Meet of Champs in two weeks”. CBA nearly swept the 3,200 podium, with Gavin Schmitt finishing second and Ryan Collins placing third. In the 1,600, Wyatt Falkowski and Sean Galvin backed up Hnatt with third‑ and fourth‑place finishes. Senior Matt McInerney added a runner‑up showing in the 800, clocking 2:04.93.In the high jump, Ethan McAllister delivered a major breakthrough with a personal‑best clearance of 6-5, taking the win on his second attempt. Teammate Gavin Marlin followed in second with a 6-2 finish. CBA swept the top two spots in the pole vault as well. Junior Shane Landau claimed the title by clearing 13-0 on his second attempt, with Thomas Zawisza securing the runner‑up position. The Colts also picked up critical points in the shot put, where Colin Pinguelo and Matthew Orio placed third and fourth. To close out the meet, the 4x400 relay team of Gavin Brunelli, Liam Wheeler, Finn Sheehan, and Billy Reilly combined for a third‑place finish in 3:28.18. “When I came here in 2001, CBA was known for its distance group and it’s still known for its distance group, but now it’s also known to be a total track team and that was always my goal”, said Torchia. We scored in the shot put, went one and two in the high jump and one, two and three in the pole vault, so we’re scoring all over the place and it’s important for the program to keep progressing that way". From distance to field events to the relays, Christian Brothers delivered a wire‑to‑wire team performance—one befitting the most decorated program in state history. “These kids put in a ton of work”, said Torchia. “It’s not just physical, it’s mental. With all this snow, we haven’t been able to train the way we’ve wanted to, we’ve beem training in the hallways or on the treadmills. It was a tough thing to get through, and these guys came through like champs. They were sharing treadmills, going to each other’s house to get on bikes and just doing everything they possibly can to keep progressing to make sure they’re going to win the state championship”.
