At Fort Worth's Amphibian Stage, astronaut's journey follows husband's tragic, failed attempt.
The idea of space travel sounds exciting. But in playwright Leegrid Stevens’Sarah Rutan stars as astronaut Molly Jennis in Amphibian Stage's production of Leegrid Stevens' "Spaceman."
Confined in her capsule, she’s seven months into the eight-month trip, talking to herself and her pet plant, imagining luxuries like an Epsom salt bath and a freshly cooked omelette, and wondering what awaits her on the Red Planet. Adding psychological pressure to physical inconveniences like weightlessness and radiation exposure is Molly’s backstory: Her husband tried the same journey and tragically failed.
The surround-sound production in Amphibian Stage’s black box theater is the first the play has received since its Off-Off-Broadway premiere three years ago. Co-artistic director Jay Duffer approached Stevens, a Hill Country native and Southern Methodist University graduate, about producing the show in Fort Worth, where the playwright has connections. His wife grew up in nearby Keller and his mother-in-law is a Fort Worth native and Amphibian Stage patron.
