“Oakland, we love you,” Schaaf said, choking up with emotion as she closed her speech. “It has been the honor of a lifetime to serve as your mayor.”
With just a couple months left to cement her reputation as Oakland’s 50th mayor, Libby Schaaf focused her final “state of the city” address Wednesday on her accomplishments, straying away from issues plaguing the city as she prepares to leave office.
But for a mayor who, following her election victory in 2014, committed to “telling the Oakland story in a clear, compelling way,” her final annual address on Wednesday was another attempt to fulfill that promise. “What a tragedy to lose that incredible progress,” Schaaf said of the past two years, before expressing confidence that the city’s Ceasefire strategy — intended to negotiate peace between gangs and build police-community relations — will ultimately be effective.
The same poll revealed a stark level of dissatisfaction among Oakland residents: more than 60% say the city is on the wrong track, and 97% believe gun violence and homelessness are “extremely or very serious” problems.
