IMF rejects Venezuela’s US$5 billion virus aid request

THE International Monetary Fund yesterday rejected economically devastated Venezuela’s request for a US$5 billion loan to help it cope with the coronavirus pandemic. President Nicolas Maduro made the request earlier in the day, but in a statement hours later, the Washington-based institution indirectly cited a dispute over his leadership when denying his petition.
