U.S. figure skater Ilia Malinin, a top gold medal contender, finished eighth in the men's free skate final at the Winter Olympics after falling twice. He cited the pressure of the Olympics and an overwhelming rush of thoughts and memories as factors in his performance.

U.S. men's figure skater Ilia Malinin reflected on his performance in the men's free skate final at the Winter Olympics , revealing a cascade of thoughts and memories that impacted his routine. Malinin, a highly regarded contender for the gold medal representing the United States, experienced an unexpected stumble, falling twice during his program. This unexpected turn of events led him to finish in eighth place, missing out on a spot on the podium.

In a post-competition interview with NBC Washington, Malinin described the experience, stating that his mind was flooded with numerous thoughts and recollections just before he took his starting position, an influx that he believed possibly overwhelmed him. He acknowledged a diverse range of life experiences, both positive and negative, and attributed the pressure of being an Olympic gold medal hopeful as a factor that he couldn't control in that moment. \Malinin underscored the significant influence of the Olympic pressure, especially considering it was his inaugural Olympic games. He highlighted the unique intensity of the Olympics, which he felt many people might not fully grasp unless they've experienced it firsthand. He conveyed that, going into the competition, he felt confident and well-prepared, but the events unfolded with such rapidity that he had insufficient time to process them. Malinin found some solace in the team gold medal he helped secure earlier in the week, as he sought to mentally process the outcome of Friday's performance. He viewed the team gold as a positive aspect, believing it would help him understand what occurred in the individual event. He had prepared for multiple programs or performances, and he admitted he hadn't yet fully grasped what went wrong. The skater's early dominance was evident when he topped the short program earlier that week, leading by a margin exceeding five points, with a score of 108.16. However, his final performance marked a significant deviation. \During Friday's routine, Malinin began strongly with a quad-flip but then transitioned to a single axel and a double loop instead of a quad. He also encountered a fall during a quad Lutz attempt and another fall shortly after. His score of 156.33 was considerably lower compared to the world record score of 238.24, which he set in December, and fell short of his typical 200-mark score in free skate. Mikhail Shaidorov of Kazakhstan won the gold medal with a total score of 291.58, achieving a personal best. Shaidorov's free skate score of 198.94 was also the highest of his career. Yuma Kagiyama of Japan secured the silver, and Shun Sato, Kagiyama's teammate, took home the bronze. Malinin, who consistently scores in the 300s, finished with a total of 264.49, significantly below his personal best of 333.81. Malinin immediately congratulated his Kazakhstani competitor after the event. Reflecting on the past, Malinin noted that if he had been present in Beijing four years prior, his performance would not have been as challenging. He was 17 years old when he was not selected, a sign of a mental battle he confirmed shortly after exiting the ice. Malinin's finish elicited widespread disappointment among Team USA and ice skating fans on social media
