it’s becoming increasingly evident that science lacks the tools to adequately plumb the depths of Tucker Carlson’s perverse bloodlust. One could draw a line from his rants on replacement theory to at least three mass shootings. But let’s not forget the line that ran quite recently from Tucker’s mouth to Greg Abbott’s ear. More than, it’s a theme that runs through these articles on page A4 of the May 4 print edition and too many others.
Performative cruelty — GOP theatrics on full display. Here in Texas, it’s an all-out declaration of war against public schools, immigrants, women, transgender children and their families, voting, rural health care, books, drag shows, tenured faculty and municipal self-rule. It’s no wonder families are fleeing the state while others refuse to step foot into it.
Tragically and literally, children have become casualties in this war. The best our governor can do is disingenuously mumble something about “illegal immigrants” or force schools to display the Ten Commandments. As if “thou shalt not kill” is some cost-effective deterrent for mass shooters.I don’t think these sentiments are held by a majority of Texans. Polls suggest as much. Demographically threatened, Abbott takes his cues from and panders to a small, angry but vocal contingent.
Before we know it, little by little our great state will be run by a dictator such as those of Russia, China and North Korea. And you know what they do to those who oppose them. We have the right to vote as citizens, but new state laws are being passed to revoke the votes we have the right to cast. This must not happen. Our country and state are supposed to be democracies. The Republican Party leadership has become so corrupt and abusive they are no longer recognizable. We cannot and must not remain silent, gullible and complacent. Our democracy must prevail at all times. We cannot let them take our rights away.
