Current race leader, Dallas Seavey, facing penalty over moose dispatch
Published: Mar. 6, 2024 at 7:58 PM AKSTFAIRBANKS, Alaska -As of 3 p.m. Wednesday, Dallas Seavey has taken over the lead for the Iditarod and is trying to grow his lead. Seavey left the Ophir checkpoint at 5:39 a.m., 11 minutes after he checked into Ophir.
Jessie Holmes follows Seavey in second, who checked in to Ophir at 3:46 a.m. and has stayed to rest. Matthew Failor checked in to Ophir six hours later to round out the top three. Jeff Deeter and Nicolas Petit are in fourth and fifth, and are the most recent to make it to the Ophir checkpoint. Additionally, the Iditarod released a statement on Twitter saying a 2-hour time penalization will be added to Dallas Seavey’s 24-hour layover.
As per rule 34 – killing of game animals: In the event that an edible big game animal , is killed in defense of life or property, the musher must gut the animal and report the incident to a race official at the next checkpoint.Copyright 2024 KTVF. All rights reserved.
