Bruce Skaug, the bill's sponsor, who previously championed legislation to reinstate the firing squad as a backup to lethal injection, cites last year's botched lethal injection of condemned serial killer Thomas Eugene Creech as evidence of the flaws in that method.Creech, who was initially sentenced to death for the murders of John Wayne Bradford and Edward Thomas Arnold in 1974, was later convicted of murdering David Dale Jensen in 1983. He survived a scheduled lethal injection in 2022, the fourth such incident in the U.S. in recent years. The problematic execution highlighted the ongoing challenges states face in obtaining the necessary drugs for lethal injections, a process that has become increasingly difficult since the last American manufacturer of a key drug discontinued production in 2009. Skaug argues that the firing squad is a more reliable, humane, and expeditious method of execution compared to lethal injection. He points to the successful execution of three inmates using the firing squad in recent years, which resulted in quick and dignified deaths.
