Idaho lawmakers are advancing a bill to make the firing squad the state's primary method of execution, citing concerns over the reliability and availability of lethal injection drugs. The bill comes as prosecutors seek the death penalty for Bryan Kohberger, accused of murdering four University of Idaho students.

Idaho lawmakers are moving to make the firing squad the state's primary method of execution as the trial of Bryan Kohberger , the aspiring criminologist accused of murdering four University of Idaho students, approaches. H0037, a bill that would elevate the firing squad from a backup to the main execution method, has advanced to the Idaho House floor after passing the Judiciary, Rules and Administration Committee on Tuesday. Rep.

Bruce Skaug, the bill's sponsor, who previously championed legislation to reinstate the firing squad as a backup to lethal injection, cites last year's botched lethal injection of condemned serial killer Thomas Eugene Creech as evidence of the flaws in that method.Creech, who was initially sentenced to death for the murders of John Wayne Bradford and Edward Thomas Arnold in 1974, was later convicted of murdering David Dale Jensen in 1983. He survived a scheduled lethal injection in 2022, the fourth such incident in the U.S. in recent years. The problematic execution highlighted the ongoing challenges states face in obtaining the necessary drugs for lethal injections, a process that has become increasingly difficult since the last American manufacturer of a key drug discontinued production in 2009. Skaug argues that the firing squad is a more reliable, humane, and expeditious method of execution compared to lethal injection. He points to the successful execution of three inmates using the firing squad in recent years, which resulted in quick and dignified deaths. Skaug acknowledges that the firing squad might initially seem barbaric to some, but insists that its certainty and speed make it a more just alternative.Idaho's move to prioritize the firing squad comes as prosecutors seek the death penalty for Kohberger in the murders of four University of Idaho students: Madison Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin. His trial, scheduled for later this year, will determine his fate on four first-degree murder charges and one felony burglary charge. Kohberger has pleaded not guilty to all charges
