The hazardous conditions caused cars to spin off highways and made walking treacherous. NBC 5's Lisa Chavarria reported numerous accidents on icy roads, some serious, with vehicles colliding with trees and fences. The National Weather Service (NWS) warned that roads might appear clear but were actually very slippery.
Multiple suburbs experienced icing throughout Thursday, particularly in the northwest and southeast regions, including Hoffman Estates, Tinley Park, Joliet, Berwyn, and Chicago Heights. The Office of Emergency Management and Communications urged residents to exercise caution and avoid rushing. Freezing drizzle may persist early Thursday, gradually diminishing by daybreak. Temperatures are expected to stay below freezing until at least 8 a.m., creating slick conditions for the morning commute. Meteorologist Roman emphasized the importance of waiting for temperatures to rise above freezing for the ice to melt. He warned that even a thin layer of ice could cause significant disruptions on untreated roads.Reports indicate ice accumulations in some areas, reaching up to 0.14 inches in Sugar Grove. O'Hare International Airport recorded 0.13 inches of ice, Midway International Airport observed 0.12 inches, and Waukegan experienced a tenth of an inch. Roman urged residents to be cautious, highlighting the hazardous conditions. Temperatures are expected to climb above freezing between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m., leading to improved road conditions. Afternoon temperatures are anticipated in the upper 30s and low 40s, with winds picking up, reaching gusts of 35 to 40 miles per hour, particularly overnight. Friday is expected to be dry, but another wintry mix of sleet and snow might arrive by Saturday afternoon
