The shooting adds to the series of incidents in which immigration agents have fired their weapons during enforcement operations.
A federal law enforcement officer fired rounds Wednesday morning during an operation in the Willowbrook area of southern Los Angeles County, officials said. The shooting occurred near 126th Street and Mona Boulevard shortly after 7 a.
m. local time. No civilians were injured, authorities confirmed. A U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer sustained an unspecified injury during the encounter, according to the Department of Homeland Security . Why It Matters Wednesday's shooting in Southern California adds to a growing series of incidents in which Immigration and Customs Enforcement and other DHS agents have fired their weapons during immigration enforcement operations. Such encounters have drawn increased scrutiny nationwide following the killing of Renée Nicole Good, which sparked protests across the country, and the recent shooting of Venezuelan national Julio Cesar Sosa‑Celis in the leg during an enforcement action in Minnesota. California has seen multiple similar incidents. In October, ICE officers opened fire in two separate operations in South Los Angeles and Ontario, with DHS officials saying agents fired defensive shots after fearing for their lives. The department said the suspect had used his vehicle to ram law enforcement, though footage appeared to show the car stationary when shots were fired. The badge of an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent is seen in the halls of immigration court at the Jacob K. Javits Federal Building on June 9, 2025, in New York City. What To Know DHS said on X that officers were conducting a targeted operation in nearby Compton around 7:05 a.m. to arrest a man identified as William Eduardo Moran Carballo, a citizen of El Salvador. The agency said the man is suspected of involvement in a human smuggling operation and has two prior arrests related to allegations of inflicting corporal injury on a spouse or cohabitant. The agency said an immigration judge issued him a final order of removal in 2019. DHS said Carballo attempted to evade arrest and “weaponized his vehicle“ by ramming law enforcement officers, prompting an agent to fire defensive shots. The department said the shots did not strike Carballo, who then tried to flee on foot but was taken into custody. Local law enforcement agencies, including the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department and the California Highway Patrol, responded to the scene following the shooting and a collision involving the suspect's vehicle. Officials cordoned off the area as investigators collected evidence. What People Are Saying California Assemblymember Mike Gipson, a Democrat, said in a statement: “I'm pissed as I ask: How many more shots need to be fired? How many more agents need to bring their reckless gunplay into our safe spaces?“ The Department of Homeland Security wrote on X: “These dangerous attempts to evade arrest have surged since sanctuary politicians, including Governor Newsom, have encouraged illegal aliens to evade arrest and provided guides advising illegal aliens how to recognize ICE, block entry, and defy arrest. Our officers are now facing a 3,200 percent increase in vehicle attacks.“ Neighbor Miguel Carrillo told the Los Angeles Times of the shooting: “It feels reckless. There's kids who walk to school here.“
