Batavia, N.Y. — Newly released federal data shows the detainee population at the Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Buffalo Service Processing Center in Batavia has grown significantly over the past year, surpassing the facility’s stated capacity amid ongoing concerns about living conditions.
, the detainee population at the Batavia ICE detention center increased by 200 people between January 2025 and February 2026, bringing the total daily population to 745.— which began Oct. 1, 2025 — confirm the facility is currently housing 745 detainees despite having a reported capacity of 650 beds. The center’s capacity was increased from 400 to 650 for the 2026 fiscal year when comparing data from“The workers that we remain in contact with following the raid, shared that there were often not enough beds for everybody,” Szpunt said. Szpunt added that some detainees reported medical emergencies were not adequately addressed and described food quality as poor. He said several workers ultimately chose to self-deport after months in detention. “Some of the workers were there for several months and opted to self-deport because the conditions were so bad, they just didn't even want to be there anymore,” she said. However, accounts from detainees have varied. Last week, a Syracuse couple detained by ICE described their experience at the Batavia facility through a translator. Rose Brynien, who translated for the couple, Alex Gonzalez and Yan Vazquez, said the detainee reported that hygiene and general living conditions were acceptable. “When it comes to your hygiene and living conditions, he says it’s not a bad living condition," Brynien said. "You get all of your toiletries, your sheets get changed, in that aspect, it’s not bad."Data also shows that most detainees housed at the Batavia facility are classified as non-criminal. Of the 745 people currently detained, 621 are categorized as non-criminal, while 124 are classified as criminal detainees. That represents a decline in the number of detainees deemed criminal, down from 248 in fiscal year 2025. Szpunt emphasized that many of the workers her organization represents have longstanding ties to the United States. “These workers are just here to support their families. They're not doing anything wrong,” she said. “Some of them have been in this country for decades and just haven't been given a process to get citizenship.”“We have been monitoring the situation, my staff has been monitoring it,” Gillibrand said. “We have been informed that the conditions are horrific, and we have demanded that they rectify it and make sure there’s not crowding, and improve the conditions.”Requests for comment were sent to ICE, the Department of Homeland Security, and Rep.
