ICE launches its first major enforcement operation under the Trump administration, targeting undocumented immigrants with criminal records. Over 530 individuals are arrested across multiple states for offenses ranging from sexual assault to drug offenses.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement ( ICE ) conducted nationwide operations this week that resulted in more than 530 arrests across several states, marking its first major enforcement action under the Trump administration. Between January 21st and January 23rd, ICE ’s Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) apprehended individuals with charges or convictions including sexual assault, robbery, aggravated assault, and drug offenses.

Agents arrested nationals from a wide range of countries, including Afghanistan, Angola, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Senegal, and Venezuela. ICE also issued nearly 400 detainers, which are requests to notify ICE when undocumented individuals are released from custody. These requests targeted individuals charged with severe crimes such as homicide, sexual assault, and robbery. The crackdown focused on undocumented immigrants with criminal records. Arrests occurred in multiple states, though specific details on all 460 arrests were not disclosed. According to Pew Research Center, Trump's border czar, Tom Homan, emphasized that ICE is prioritizing public safety threats but will also target individuals in sanctuary cities. 'Right out of the gate it’s public safety threats, those who are in the country illegally that have been convicted, arrested for serious crime,' Homan stated. 'But let me be clear. There's not only public safety threats that will be arrested, because in sanctuary cities, we're not allowed to get that public safety threat in the jail, which means we got to go to the neighborhood and find him.' As the immigration landscape is anticipated to undergo significant changes in 2025, FOX 5 NY will continue to provide updates with reporters Jessica Formoso and Stephanie Bertini on the ground
