ICE agents were reportedly spotted in San Jose on Sunday, prompting a response from the Rapid Response Network of Santa Clara County. While no detentions were observed, the network believes the agents were conducting operations targeting individuals with deportation orders. Mayor Matt Mahan expressed hope that ICE will focus on serious criminals and not law-abiding community members.
Agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) were reported to be in San Jose on Sunday, according to a tip received by the Rapid Response Network of Santa Clara County. The network stated they received information about agents spotted outside a residence on South White Road and Tully Road, and again behind a Target on King and Story Roads. The Rapid Response Network team reacted to the tip and followed the officers from the home on South White Road.
While officials with the organization didn't witness any detentions based on the ICE agents' actions and what their workers heard, they indicated that the agents appeared to be conducting operations focused on enforcing deportation orders targeting specific individuals. 'We urge our community to stay safe and remain vigilant,' said the Rapid Response Network. 'Your safety is our priority…Our responders are ready to support and protect our community.' By 3:30 p.m., ICE agents were no longer reported to be in the King and Story Roads area, according to the group. The San Jose Police Department stated they had no further information to share regarding ICE's presence in the city. Additionally, San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan confirmed their knowledge of the ICE activity, stating, 'Our police department was notified today that ICE is carrying out an operation in San Jose… I sincerely hope that ICE remains focused on enforcement actions related to violent and serious criminals harming our city, not neighbors who are contributing and law-abiding members of our community.' The mayor's office emphasized that the police department does not participate or assist in any ICE operations.KTVU reached out to ICE but did not receive a response before publication. Residents seeking more information or assistance can contact the Rapid Response Network hotline at (408) 290-1144. The California Immigrant Policy Center has also compiled a list of 'rapid response networks,' which are community-based organizations that respond to emergencies, including immigration enforcement, throughout the state. This list includes contact information for various rapid response networks across California, allowing communities to connect with support in times of need.
