Sony has managed to reinvent true wireless earbuds with its new donut-shaped earbuds. Check out the review of Sony LinkBuds from ForbesVetted
As I mentioned, the LinkBuds look unlike any earbuds you’ve ever seen. Shaped like a pair of overlapping buttons, the speaker—the part that sits over your ear canal—is ring-shaped, with a 12mm driver and a hole in the middle designed to allow ambient sounds through. The battery and electronics are housed in a small dome that sits in your ear, above and clear of the canal.
Speaking of fit, I was initially disappointed that the charging case doesn’t charge wirelessly, but Sony won back a lot of goodwill with a case design that doesn’t make me struggle to get the earbuds out. This is one of the great rarely discussed tragedies of the 21st century; most earbuds are as slick as ice and wedged into their charging case such that I need pliers to get them out. It’s a small thing, but I really appreciate how easily the LinkBuds pop in and out of their case.
I saved one of my favorite features for last: Both earbuds respond to double- and triple-taps, but you don’t tap the earbuds themselves. Instead, jus tap anywhere around your ear. So to pause playback, for example, I double-tap my right cheek; triple tapping my cheek skips to the next track. The earbuds also work with Spotify Tap, which means I can double-tap my left cheek to instantly start playing Spotify.
