The 20-year-old has turned her life around
A woman who used to walk the streets of Manchester as a homeless teenager says her life has taken a “surreal” turn after being accepted into Oxford University. Chloe Pomfret, 20, grew up in foster care during her early school years after becoming estranged from her family after the death of her grandfather.
“It’s still surreal when I walk out into Oxford. You see all these big, fancy buildings, and it’s just a whole other world,” Chloe told PA Real Life. “You go to formals, where they’re serving you food, I have a cleaner that comes and cleans my room, and I just think, ‘What on Earth?’ At the age of 11, she moved in with her grandfather, who was living with cancer but with whom she had a great relationship. He was always there for her no matter how "stupid" she felt, or how "silly" her behaviour was.
“Struggling with the grieving process” and “acting up in school”, Chloe claims her father then told her to “pack bags and go”, leaving her homeless aged 16. She had gone from thinking “it was me and my grandpa against the world” to feeling “alone and isolated”, and says she contemplated suicide while living on the streets.
This led to her Oxford University application but during this time, Chloe’s two-year tenancy in supported accommodation had expired and she faced becoming homeless once more. Chloe was the co-chair for Class Act, a campaigning organisation at Oxford, supporting students from working class backgrounds, as well as care leavers and estranged students, and she also mentors and shares advice with other estranged students through working with free social mobility enterprise Zero Gravity. She wants to continue helping and supporting others who have similar backgrounds, and said she feels “lucky” to have overcome all the challenges she has faced.
