A schoolgirl with cancer who faces choice of ‘dragging herself into GCSEs’ or sitting exams in hospital when unwell is fighting for a change in policy to allow seriously ill children to be awarded Teacher Assessed Grades 🔎 Big Read by AasmaDay

Lara’s parents, Sophia Kyrianou and Matthew Hickman, who are both teachers themselves, say there is no way Lara will be well enough to sit her GCSE exams, whether at school or in hospital – and they feel it is unfair that she is penalised for an illness that has suddenly turned her life upside down.

Lara’s ordeal began after she suddenly found a lump in her neck in January and began undergoing tests which later revealed she had Sophia adds: “The certificate of recognition would just be saying: ‘these are the exams you would have passed’ and it will not be worth the paper it is written on. “No child going through such gruelling treatment should have to sit an exam in hospital,” says Sophia. “How is that in any way humane or helping her?

“It’s really important to me that I get the grades I deserve. I passed all my mocks and I’ve got evidence for each subject. “I stupidly assumed that she would be given Teacher Assessed Grades as they had throughout Covid, mainly because it was the right thing to do. I was so very wrong. We were told early on when Grace was in intensive care that she would get nothing if she didn’t sit her exams and would have to re-sit all of them in the future.”

“The not knowing what was going to happen put so much extra stress on Grace. She had worked so hard and felt so disappointed that she may have nothing to show for it. “My daughter did not deserve to have to fight for her exam results whilst fighting for her life and I will do all I can to assist Lara’s family to make sure that she receives the results she so rightly deserves.”raised Lara’s story in PMQs and Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, said he would try to find a resolution.
