In the latest episode of his Mind the Game podcast LeBron James candidly spoke about the twilight of his career and the growth mindset and evolved playing style that he's adapted at 41.

CLEVELAND, Ohio — At 41 years old, LeBron James continues to defy father time and basketball logic. While most players his age have long since retired to the commentary booth or the golf course, The King is still putting up numbers that would be impressive for a player in their prime.

Indiana Pacers guard Tyrese Haliburton took over co-hosting duties and immediately wanted to know how LeBron manages to still dominate the league at his advanced basketball age. “You’ve been playing lately... at your big age. The way you’ve been hooping, averaging 23, 6 and 7,” Haliburton marveled, breaking down the statistical rarity of what James is doing. “31 players in history have played after their 40th birthday and only 10 have played over 1,000 minutes, but only five have averaged over 10. That is insane.”LeBron’s response revealed both the physical struggle and mental determination behind his sustained excellence. “It’s very fascinating to me and it’s kind of like weird too at times,” James admitted candidly. “It’s times where I wake up on game days and I’ll be like, I don’t got it man. I don’t have the energy, you know, I’m tired. I don’t know how I’m going to be able to work up what you need to get through a 48-minute game.” The conversation provided a rare glimpse into the mind of one of basketball’s greatest players as he navigates the twilight of his career.“I think for me it’s just about like having like growth mindset,” James explained. “Understanding like the game of basketball evolves and the game of basketball changes and you have to be able to see the table turn and you have to be able to evolve with it if you want to continue to stay, you know, abreast to what’s going on with the game.”LeBron’s early career was defined by explosive athleticism, but he’s had to adapt his style as he’s aged, focusing more on his basketball IQ and experience. “As you continue to get older and your body... you listen to your body. How can you still be effective on the court?” James reflected. “It’s 2026 right now, which sounds crazy to me. You know, I came in in ’03, but the game in 2029 could look different than right now.” Perhaps most revealing was LeBron’s admission about what drives him to keep pushing through the physical challenges. “I’m trying to squeeze as much juice out of the lemon, out of the orange, out of whatever that’s left as much as I can,” James said. “Just continue to go on and play the game that I love, man.” The conversation between Haliburton and James highlighted not just the statistical marvel of LeBron’s late-career excellence, but also the mental fortitude and adaptability required to maintain it.
