VFX artists respond to The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, finding the sole saving grace of the much-maligned Alan Moore comic book movie.

Despite being lambasted by critics and disowned by original comic creator Alan Moore, VFX artists have praised the use of practical effects in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Loosely based on Moore’s comic series of the same name, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen followed a group of famous 19th-century literary characters reimagined as a team of Victorian-era superheroes.

Despite opening against the box office juggernaut Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen managed to gross over $179 million at the worldwide box office during its 2003 theatrical run.

Once intended to jumpstart its own continuing franchise, all hopes for a sequel were quashed quickly after The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen’s debut. However, in 2015, it was reported that 20th Century Fox was developing a reboot, which was intended to be female-led and more in keeping with the original comics’ focus on the Dracula character Mina Murray.
