A multi-year project to create a new diverging diamond interchange at I-90 and Hwy 18 is nearing completion. This $188 million project aims to reduce traffic delays and improve safety, following over 400 crashes on SR 18 between 2008 and 2021 that resulted in fatalities and injuries. Final paving and striping will require at least three weekend closures of Hwy 18, starting March 31st.
A major transformation of the interchange at I-90 and Hwy 18 is about to be complete after years of work to create a new diverging diamond. The changes are supposed to cut down on delays. WSDOT says drivers need to be ready for at least three extended weekend closures of Hwy 18 for final paving and striping work.
The first closure is the night of Tuesday, March 31st, to set up traffic control. We are told paving work begins on Thursday, April 2nd at 9 p.m. WSDOT says at least one lane of SR 18 will reopen at 5 Monday morning, April 6th. The dates of the next two weekend closures have not been announced yet, but drivers are being told all of the closures will begin on a Thursday night with at least part of Hwy 18 back open by the following Monday morning. The improvements from the 188 million dollar project are supposed to reduce backups and make the road safer.
