I-80 westbound in Wharton, New Jersey, will be closed for testing after another 'significant void' was found beneath the roadway. The closure will last from 10 p.m. Tuesday to 6 a.m. Wednesday, with detours in place. Officials are still investigating the cause of the void and how to permanently fill it.

Larry Higgs | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com\A section of Interstate 80 west in Wharton , New Jersey , will be shut down starting at 10 p.m. Tuesday night and lasting until 6 a.m. Wednesday, officials announced. The closure is necessary for further roadway testing after another 'significant void' was detected on Sunday and filled with grout on Monday. This section of Route 80 east and west in Wharton is continuously being scanned using advanced remote sensing technology.

\The Department of Transportation (DOT) stated that a subsurface void is an underground empty space or cavity, not a sinkhole. Officials are still determining the cause of the void and how to permanently fill it. Steve Schapiro, a NJDOT spokesperson, explained that while there are mine shafts in the area, it's unclear if this void is connected to them. 'The next steps are to determine what the void is and how to fill it,' he said. 'They're doing more testing on the westbound side tonight.' \The closure of I-80 west will result in traffic detours at Exit 34B in Wharton. Drivers will be directed to Route 15 North/Jefferson/Sparta. At Pondview Drive, drivers should keep left to stay on Route 15 northbound. Use the two left lanes to make a U-turn onto Route 15 south and keep right to take the ramp to I-80 west. \I-80 east traffic will be directed to use Exit 34 to Route 15/Wharton/Dover/Sparta. Drivers should follow the signs for Wharton and turn left onto East Dewey Avenue to reach Route 15 north. From Route 15 north, take the left towards I-80 east. \State DOT officials are encouraging drivers to avoid Wharton by continuing to detour at Exit 28 for Routes 46 and 10. The NJDOT requests that eastbound drivers utilize this detour to reduce congestion in Wharton. State Police are also manually controlling traffic signals on Route 46, Route 10, and Route 15 during peak hours to alleviate traffic flow. \While the DOT works on the current issue, Wharton Mayor William Chegwidden posted on Facebook Monday afternoon that the DOT found additional problems with the roadway's integrity. \The December closure of I-80 eastbound due to a sinkhole near the same location was attributed to the collapse of an abandoned mine shaft. That repair is stable and unaffected by this current situation. \The DOT is employing advanced remote sensing technology to continuously scan this section of Route 80 east and west. There are known subsurface voids beneath the surface in nine northern counties, mostly in a band across northwestern New Jersey, according to a map provided by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. These voids include the one blamed for causing the December sinkhole on I-80
