Francine is expected to make landfall Wednesday in Louisiana, southwest of New Orleans, as a Category 1 hurricane.with maximum sustained winds of 90 mph and is forecast to keep strengthening - possibly to a Category 2 storm - ahead of landfall along the Louisiana coast Wednesday.
"Do not wait until the last minute - Francine is intensifying quickly and immediate action is critical," the agency said. The most severe impacts are likely to be felt in southern Louisiana around the time of landfall, but the storm will be felt long before that over a wider area of the Gulf Coast. Heavy rain-caused flooding also presents a significant threat. Flood watches have been hoisted for parts of the Gulf Coast - some areas that are expected to get doused by Francine were soaked by a non-tropical system last week, so it will take less rain to cause flash flooding.
