Hundreds of students were evacuated after a fire at a West Campus apartment complex early Tuesday morning. The Austin Fire Department says that crews initially responded to a fire on the eighth floor of The Mark Austin, located at 812 W.
23rd St., at around 2:45 a.m. The fire was upgraded to a second alarm when AFD arrived. The fire department says that 28 units and 88 personnel responded to the scene. Fire crews worked to extinguish the fire while evacuating residents. The fire damage was contained to one room and an adjacent hallway in the building, but water damaged multiple floors.AFD says that one person was evaluated for injuries by medics with Austin-Travis County EMS; that person was released without transport to a hospital. Hundreds were initially evacuated from the building. AFD says that much of the building was cleared for residents to return to their units before 5 a.m., however 52 remain displaced due to damage to their apartments.
