Onboard observers are stationed on survey vessels to protect marine mammals. In terms of acoustic systems used during survey work — partly to map out project areas and establish where to bury cables and other infrastructure — officials from NOAA and the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management’s Center for Marine Acoustics said in mid-January that they have not been shown to seriously harm the animals.
