A dead whale washed up on the Jersey shore Monday — marking the ninth carcass to come ashore in the New York-New Jersey area since early December in what activists say is an alarming uptick.
Environmentalists are concerned about the recent uptick in dead whale sightings.Local lawmakers questioned if there is a connection between the uptick in deaths and ongoing wind energy projects off the Jersey Shore.Federal scientists have not been able to establish any link between the two to date.It’s unclear what type of whale washed up in Manasquan, but Kanitra estimated the carcass was the size of a bus.
Activists and government officials have called on the Biden administration to suspend all offshore wind projects in light of the recent whale deaths until a thorough investigation rules them out. The local officials noted specific concern over the use of “acoustic survey vessels” used in the development of at least four offshore wind projects near the Jersey shore.
