City officials say the identity of the remains has not been confirmed, but it appears that the remains may be related to a missing person case from the early 2000s.
ByFERNDALE, Wash. — Whatcom County authorities have found human remains that they believe could be over a decade old.
Ferndale city employees located potential human remains partially buried on the banks of the Nooksack River during a routine inspection Monday, according to Ferndale communication officer Riley Sweeney. Upon initial review, the employees determined that the remains were in fact human and had likely been in that location for a significant amount of time.
With the assistance of the Bellingham Police Crime Scene Investigation Unit, the remains were then removed from the river bank and released to the Whatcom County Medical Examiner’s Office for further analysis. Sweeney says the identity of the remains has not been confirmed, but it appears that the remains may be related to a missing person case from the early 2000s, based on initial evidence gathered at the scene.
