The Hughes Fire, which rapidly grew to over 5,000 acres in a matter of hours, has prompted evacuations in parts of Southern California. Authorities are urging residents in affected areas to heed evacuation orders and warnings, prioritizing safety as the blaze continues to burn.
The Hughes Fire rapidly expanded to over 5,000 acres within hours on Wednesday, posing a significant threat to Southern California residents still recovering from the devastation caused by the Palisades and Eaton Fires. Authorities from the Angeles National Forest and the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's office swiftly issued evacuation orders and warnings for designated evacuation zones.
Residents are urged to determine if their homes, workplaces, or schools fall within an evacuation zone by consulting official resources. Evacuation orders indicate an imminent threat to life, requiring immediate departure from the area. Only essential personnel, such as first responders, are permitted to enter these zones. Evacuation warnings, on the other hand, signal a potential threat to life and property. While immediate evacuation is not mandatory, individuals who require additional time during a full evacuation order, or those with pets and livestock, are strongly advised to leave promptly. As of 3 p.m., the following locations were under evacuation orders according to authorities. The 5 Freeway, including the Grapevine and north of SR 126, is closed. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) advises that northbound traffic will be diverted at SR-126, and southbound traffic will be diverted at Grapevine Road. Motorists are encouraged to utilize Quickmap or Google Maps to find alternative routes. Additionally, Ridge Route Rd at Lake Hughes, Lake Hughes at Pine Cyn, and the Golden State Freeway are under evacuation orders. For residents with pets or farm animals evacuating from the Hughes Fire, the Angeles National Forest has provided a list of animal evacuation centers, including Hart High School.
