Roselle Catholic continued their impressive run by upsetting Don Bosco Prep, further highlighting the competitiveness within the Union County Conference.
Jayden Johnson (1) of Elizabeth tries to steal the ball away from Micah Gordon (5) of Plainfield during the boys basketball game at Dunn Sports Arena in Elizabeth, NJ on Thursday, December 19, 2024Fewer than 24 hours after No. 2 Union Catholic had fallen to then-No. 13 Roselle Catholic in a typical Union County Conference dogfight, the state’s No. 1 team seemed in peril of losing its status.
Hudson Catholic - which assumed the top spot just last week - seemed to have misplaced all of the good elements of its offensive game Sunday afternoon in the opening half against Montclair Immaculate at the Big Jersey Basketball Challenge Series at Caldwell University. The Hawks committed 13 turnovers in that half and found themselves trailing, 24-21, as they trudged into the locker room. But Hudson Catholic charged out with their shoulders a little straighter and heads a bit higher and rallied to beat the Lions, 60-53, behind the spark of seniors Omari Moore and Keith McKnight. Later that day at the same event, Roselle Catholic - just four days removed from a 22-point loss to Hudson Catholic - cooked up another stunner by defeating then-No. 5 Don Bosco Prep, 50-45, with some outstanding play from junior guard Trevon Lewis. Between the dizzying talent in the Union County Conference Watchung Division (4 teams in the Top 20) and the Big Jersey Basketball series, guard changes near the top of the poll are likely to become a common occurrence this winter. Roselle Catholic, which vaults to No. 5, No. 1 Hudson, No. 3 St. Peter’s Prep, No. 6 Bergen Catholic, No. 7 Don Bosco Prep, No. 14 Rutgers Prep, No. 15 Gil St. Bernard’s and Immaculate are all participating in this four-part Big Jersey challenge, which is only halfway completed. Four more games are scheduled at Caldwell this Sunday, and the last four will be Jan. 26 at Caldwell. The Hawks began the new year with a convincing win over N
