The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has initiated a Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) task force to identify and eliminate waste, following President Donald Trump's executive order establishing a DOGE program. Simultaneously, Elon Musk's presidential advisory committee, DOGE, is intensifying its review of federal agencies, resulting in the cancellation of millions of dollars in contracts and grants, particularly those focused on diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. This move has sparked debate, with Democratic lawmakers raising concerns about Musk's role as an unelected official overseeing such a significant amount of taxpayer money.
HUD Secretary Scott Turner announced on Thursday the launch of a Department of Government Efficiency ( DOGE ) task force aimed at eliminating waste. \Turner, in a video posted to X, stated, 'I'm happy to announce the DOGE task force here at HUD. We will be very detailed and deliberate about every dollar spent in serving tribal, rural and urban communities across America.
' A press release from HUD explained that the task force will examine how the agency is spending American taxpayer dollars and how to best maximize its budget. The task force, comprised of HUD employees, will meet regularly to report any findings and suggestions to Turner.\This initiative aligns with President Donald Trump's executive order 'Establishing and Implementing the President's 'Department of Government Efficiency,'' which both established a presidential advisory committee led by Elon Musk and directed the heads of each federal agency to create a DOGE team with at least four employees. Turner emphasized, 'With President Trump's leadership, business as usual, the status quo is no longer the posture that we will take. And with the help of DOGE, we will identify and eliminate all waste, fraud and abuse.' \The announcement comes as Musk's DOGE ramps up its scrutiny of federal agencies. This week, the committee's X account highlighted the cancellation of millions of dollars worth of federal contracts and grants, many focused on diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) efforts. On Thursday, the agency cut grants for four 'Equity Assistance Centers,' valued at a combined $33 million. At the World Governments Summit in Dubai on Wednesday, Musk acknowledged that reduced spending might not be sufficient for some agencies, stating, “I think we do need to delete entire agencies, as opposed to leave part of them behind. It’s kind of like leaving a weed. If you don’t remove the roots of the weed, then it’s easy for the weed to grow back. But if you remove the roots of the weed, it doesn’t stop weeds from ever going back, but it makes it harder.” \Democratic lawmakers have voiced concerns regarding DOGE's efforts, particularly pointing to Musk's status as an unelected official. Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Texas, expressed during a Wednesday meeting of the House DOGE subcommittee, “We’re talking about someone who’s unelected, unvetted and definitely unconfirmed that is now literarily sitting atop our $6 trillion, and we don’t know what it is that he’s doing, and we honestly don’t know what role he has.
