A coalition of labor unions and advocacy groups is suing the Department of the Treasury, alleging it unlawfully shared millions of Americans' sensitive personal and financial data with Elon Musk and his cryptocurrency company, DOGE.
A coalition of labor unions and advocacy groups, represented by the Public Citizen Litigation Group and State Democracy Defenders Fund, has filed a lawsuit against the Department of the Treasury, alleging the unlawful disclosure of sensitive personal and financial information to Elon Musk and employees of his cryptocurrency enterprise, DOGE .
The complaint argues that this action constitutes a massive and unprecedented intrusion into individuals' privacy, violating federal laws such as the Privacy Act of 1974 and the Internal Revenue Code. The lawsuit states that Musk and DOGE should not have access to this data, which includes names, Social Security numbers, birth dates, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, and bank account information. It is alleged that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent granted DOGE access to these financial records on Friday, the same day that Fiscal Assistant Secretary of the Treasury David Lebryk, who had raised concerns about the move, retired. The plaintiffs, including the Alliance for Retired Americans and the American Federation of Government Employees, express grave fears that this data breach could leave seniors particularly vulnerable to fraud and scams. Richard Fiesta, executive director of the Alliance for Retired Americans, condemned the alleged violation, stating that seniors are already disproportionately targeted by these crimes and this incident could exacerbate their vulnerability. Meanwhile, the White House has defended Musk's actions, asserting that he is acting in accordance with federal laws as a special government employee and has not engaged in any wrongdoing
