The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has announced the formation of a Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) task force, aiming to eliminate waste within the agency. This move comes as Elon Musk's presidential DOGE advisory committee intensifies its scrutiny of federal agencies, leading to the cancellation of millions of dollars in contracts and grants. While supporters argue that DOGE is necessary to improve efficiency and reduce spending, critics, including Democratic lawmakers, have raised concerns about Musk's role as an unelected official leading such a powerful initiative.
HUD Secretary Scott Turner announced the launch of a Department of Government Efficiency ( DOGE ) task force aimed at eliminating waste. Turner, in a video posted on X, stated, 'We will be very detailed and deliberate about every dollar spent in serving tribal, rural and urban communities across America.' The task force, composed of HUD employees, will scrutinize how the agency spends taxpayer dollars and identify ways to maximize its budget.
The group will meet regularly to report findings and suggestions to Turner. This initiative aligns with President Donald Trump's executive order 'Establishing and Implementing the President's 'Department of Government Efficiency,'' which both established a presidential advisory committee led by Elon Musk and directed federal agency heads to create DOGE teams with at least four employees. Turner emphasized a shift away from the status quo, stating, 'And with the help of DOGE, we will identify and eliminate all waste, fraud and abuse.'This announcement coincides with Musk's DOGE ramping up its scrutiny of federal agencies. The committee's X account has highlighted the cancellation of millions of dollars worth of federal contracts and grants, many targeting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts. This week alone, the agency cut grants for four 'Equity Assistance Centers,' totaling $33 million. At the World Governments Summit in Dubai on Wednesday, Musk suggested that budget cuts may not be sufficient for some agencies. “I think we do need to delete entire agencies, as opposed to leave part of them behind,” he said. “It’s kind of like leaving a weed. If you don’t remove the roots of the weed, then it’s easy for the weed to grow back. But if you remove the roots of the weed, it doesn’t stop weeds from ever going back, but it makes it harder.”Democratic lawmakers have expressed concerns about DOGE's actions, particularly Musk's role as an unelected official. Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Texas, raised these concerns during a Wednesday meeting of the House DOGE subcommittee. She stated, 'We’re talking about someone who’s unelected, unvetted and definitely unconfirmed that is now literarily sitting atop our $6 trillion, and we don’t know what it is that he’s doing, and we honestly don’t know what role he has.' These concerns highlight the ongoing debate surrounding the scope and influence of DOGE and its impact on government agencies

This initiative comes as SpaceX, Musk's company, holds a multibillion dollar contract with NASA to land the first woman and first person of color on the moon.
