A University of Regina professor emeritus in political science refutes the idea of replacing the RCMP in favour of a provincial force. saskatchewan rcmp

is “tarnished.” They cite some of the recent cases including the Colten Boushie case in Saskatchewan, troubles with the Nova Scotia mass shooting, as well as a supposedly “misogynist culture.”Of course, the RCMP is not perfect, but as the old saying goes, the perfect is often the enemy of the good. Compared to other police forces in the world, the RCMP has an enviable reputation for incorruptibility, training and performance.

Nevertheless, the argument for a provincial police force could have been saved had the authors proceeded to the hard economic, social and service arguments that would justify its creation. Unfortunately, they provided nothing but generalities. We know from contractual arrangements that in matters of everyday policing the provincial RCMP has a clear alignment with the provincial government.

The authors also seem to assert that somehow provincial policing suffers because of the transfer of resources from the provincial force to federal needs. Again, no evidence of this.
