by Jerry Mitchell, Mississippi Today February 23, 2023 FEBRUARY 23, 1929 Elston Howard, a nine-time All-Star, became the first African-American to win AL MVP in 1963. Baseball catcher Elston Howard was born in St. Louis, Missouri. In 1955, he became the first Black player to sign with the New York Yankees, signing a $70,000 contract — the highest paid baseball player at the time. By 1959, the Yankees were often playing Howard at first base so that he could remain in the lineup.
