Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard created an environment that helped workers. Amid layoffs and worries about AI, their efforts could be an indicator of the future of the industry.
They started with fliers. The group of World of Warcraft developers at Activision Blizzard, determined to unionize, were testing the waters after Microsoft’s $69 billion acquisition. Microsoft had pledged to honor a labor neutrality agreement, active 60 days after the deal’s close, that would allow workers to explore collective bargaining without fear.
To do that organizers set up tents on the company campus for people to stop by and get information. Being able to openly exist in a space people might pass on the way to lunch, for example, made that process faster and easier. Activision Blizzard did not respond to a request for comment before publication.
