According to the World Health Organisation, immunisation saves between 2 million and 3 million lives every year. Nevertheless, Covid-19 vaccinations have not been welcomed by everyone. There are, however, consequences to such an attitude

This is according to a study titled The Value of Vaccines in Disease Prevention: A Global Perspective, undertaken by Pfizer in the US in 2019 before the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, which has put the importance of vaccines back into the global spotlight.

“Adults may have missed being administered a certain vaccine as a child or may be more susceptible to contracting a vaccine-preventable disease for reasons such as being immunocompromised, or living with a chronic illness. Along with this, our immune systems decrease when we get older, which makes adults more susceptible to contracting diseases,” he said.According to the World Health Organisation, immunisation saves between 2 million and 3 million lives every year.

“Covid-19 adds significant risk to the health of life insurance clients across all age groups. Mortality rates also rise far above the average population mortality rates once a client has tested positive for Covid-19,” the insurer said. For example, to improve and create access to PCV, Pfizer entered into a public-private partnership with the Biovac Institute and the department of health in 2015 to manufacture PCV locally as part of the country’s expanded programme on immunisation, which is one of the most comprehensive programmes of its type on the continent.

For every $1 low- and middle-income countries spend on childhood vaccinations, $44 is saved in total societal costs; and
