THIS EVENING WITH MEMORIAL DAY COMING UP. POLLS ACROSS THE TRIAD WILL BE OPENING UP FOR SWIMMING AND ALL THAT SPLASHING AROUND. YES, IT CAN BE FUN, BUT IT CAN ALSO BE DANGEROUS AS WELL. WXII 12 KELLY KENDALL SPOKE WITH EXPERTS ABOUT TIPS TO KEEP YOU AND YOUR LOVED ONES SAFE THIS POOL SEASON MAY IS NATIONAL WATER SAFETY MONTH, AND WHETHER YOU’RE HEADED TO A LAKE, A POOL OR A WATER PARK , SAFETY EXPERTS I SPOKE WITH SAY STAYING AWARE OF YOU AND YOUR KIDS SURROUNDINGS IS KEY.
Shelli Scott, the operations manager at Wet N’ Wild Emerald Pointe in Greensboro, North Carolina, said there are several things parents can do to keep their kids safe in the water this summer. “A lot of times people, when they are experiencing a drowning emergency, they slip right underneath the water, and it’s very quiet,” she said. “There’s not a lot of splashing, so it’s super important for parents to keep an eye on their children.”Scott says water parks such as Wet N’ Wild have lifeguards who watch over pools and slides. However, she said that parents are still the best supervisors of their children. She also said there’s more parents can do outside of the water.
“People forget that just because you’re in water, you still have to drink water,” she said. “Putting your body in it is not quite the same as staying hydrated, so just prevent that dehydration.”The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services also recommends that pool gates and doors are secured when pools are not in use.
For people headed to beaches or lakes, the department recommends being aware of local water conditions, such as undertows, strong currents and sudden depth changes.
