How to fly safely and responsibly during the pandemic
“When you go to an airport, you need to realize that there's going to be some risk that you're going to come into contact with somebody that might have this virus, or you yourself might have this virus and could spread it,” says Amesh Adalja, senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins University Center for Health Security.
Only a few designated flight attendants should offer food and beverage service to minimize contact. They should wear masks and give each traveler prepackaged snacks and single-use bottles. Travelers should check with their airline carrier for new policies on seat assignments. Many airlines have reduced flight capacity or blocked out middle seats. There may also be changes to boarding, such as boarding in groups of 10 or boarding back-to-front.
“It's not one single thing that's going to keep customers safe. It's a myriad of things coming together so they can get comfortable with air travel,” says Maria Walter, managing director of customer strategy and innovation at United Airlines. In response to customer concerns with health and safety, United developed a multilevel overhaul of its travel procedures.
