Zebra mussels have damaged infrastructure and affected the ecosystem in Canyon Lake, and they're continuing to claim more Texas lakes.
First, the invaders claimed Lake St. Clair , on the border of Michigan and Canada . By the early 1990s, they’d taken hold in the Great Lakes , then made their way into the Mississippi River Basin . The tiny creatures crept across the United States , hitching rides in the bottoms of boats and gaining a foothold in bodies of water one by one. In 2017, the invaders — zebra mussels, a type of small freshwater shellfish — came for the Guadalupe River Basin in Texas.
's Western Canyon Water Treatment Plant has three intake pipes in the reservoir, said Hunter Duncan, the agency's deputy executive manager of operations. Those pipes are at 29 feet, 49 feet and 99 feet below the lake’s surface when it’s full. The mussels colonized the upper two pipes, accumulating four to five inches deep on the surface in some areas, he said.
