State lawmakers want more control over cities
The GOP-controlled Legislature has long set their sights on reeling in what they contend are cities overstepping state authority to tax, regulate, budget, lobby and authorize debt. As defund-the-police proposals surfaced around the country in the aftermath of George Floyd’s murder, Gov. Greg AbbottHouse Bill 2127, also known as the Texas Regulatory Consistency Act
, to prevent cities and counties from passing local ordinances that state officials believe exceed what’s allowed under state law. Abbott and some business groups had long sought an expansive law to end a patchwork of local regulations and to regain state control over cities.Without a doubt, cities should adhere to state law, spend money wisely and not overburden residents with heavy taxes and fees.
City officials should have latitude to address local priorities, and their constituents should hold them accountable when they overstep. That is far better than having unfunded state mandates from legislators who convene every other year and aren’t directly answerable to local residents..
