The eastern freshwater cod has been described as 'just as important as a crocodile or white shark'. Now, experts have designed a nesting box that has delivered promising results.

During the species' breeding season last spring, 30 cod hotels were placed along the Nymboida — a main tributary to the Clarence River catchment where the species is predominantly found. "We had design constraints around building these things and securing them so that they don't get washed away and not fill up with too much sediment themselves," Dr Ebner said.While the creation of a durable and biodegradable box was crucial, Dr Ebner said "providing a small bedroom" that was attractive to the fish was just as complex.
As a volunteer with not-for-profit fish habitat restoration program OzFish, Ms Cockbain is excited about the potential of the cod hotel to help the species repopulate after natural disasters.
