“To the extent that this issue has any impact at all is going to turn on turnout, the extent to which both parties can mobilize their voters to win the Senate seat and to win the governor’s race,” said Karen Beckwith, the Flora Stone Mather professor in the Department of Political Science at Case Western Reserve University.
Many Ohio women who have abortions already have children. For instance, of the 20,605 abortions performed “The extent to which the abortion issue is going to affect that race will be the extent to which I think DeWine intends to make that a big issue,” Beckwith said.Ohio is poised to outlaw abortion without a law offering parental leave, job protections for pregnant women and enough access to affordable childcare.
“There are generations of women who have grown up with Roe,” she said. “People like me. I have two granddaughters. They’re babies. I’ll be damned if they have to fight the same fights that my grandparents fought.”In the governor’s race, there are other issues for DeWine and Whaley to campaign on besides abortion, said Beckwith, the Case political science professor.
