Here's how the Browns looked in camp as they head into Week 1.
In Ventrone’s final week of camp, he lost his chief returner in Jakeem Grant Sr. to a ruptured patella tendon and his kicker in Cade York to being waived. But he has enough time to regroup with existing returners on the roster and his new veteran kicker in Dustin Hopkins.
The Browns know it’s a risk for fifth-round pick Dorian Thompson-Robinson to be one play away, but they feel comfortable with him playing if he’s thrown into the fire. His strong arm is underrated, possibly because of his size, and he can make plays with his legs and quick processing speed.Nick Chubb looks like his usual fast, powerful, explosive self, and he’s slated for more third-down duty this season, including more passes out of the backfield.
Cooper looked amazing in camp, with plenty of one-handed grabs and other great catches, after recovering from a minor tweak at the start. Fully recovered from his core muscle surgery in February, he’s playing fast and loose and without the pain that gripped him down the stretch last season. It could be a career season for him.
Third-round pick Cedric Tillman looks polished for a rookie and provides the big body the Browns need. He’ll come up the learning curve quickly this season.I’ve been writing and saying for at least two years now that David Njoku is an 8-TD-a-year tight end with the right quarterback. Watson will bring out the beast in Njoku, and the Chief should Slam his way to those eight TDs I’ve been predicting.
The Browns also have a handful of young guys such as Jordan Kunaszyk, Tony Fields II and Mohamoud Diabate who are ready to contribute. This group made some of the biggest improvements over last year, beginning with some dominant red zone performances in the first weeks of camp. Safety Juan Thornhill was active and productive, and lived up to his vow to get a pick-six during his Chiefs homecoming.
