The Harry Potter movies never explained how Sirius Black escaped from Azkaban, but that wasn't all the films missed about the notorious prison.
Sirius Black's escape from Azkaban prison was a central part of the mystery in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, but the Harry Potter movies left out precisely how he did it—as well as several other details about the wizarding prison. The fortress was known to be dark, inhumane, and effective at keeping its prisoners behind bars thanks to the help of the dementors, who fed on the misery of their victims.
However, Sirius explained that the knowledge of his innocence kept him sane in a way most of Azkaban's prisoners were not. When the Minister for Magic visited Azkaban for an inspection, Sirius asked him for his newspaper, and Fudge complied. It was then that the wrongly imprisoned wizard saw Peter Pettigrew in his rat form in the paper and read that his "owner," Ron, would be returning to Hogwarts—where Harry attended school.
6 The Dementors Are Native To Azkaban’s Island When the Ministry of Magic found the island that Ekrizdis had left behind, it was clear that the Muggles who had been held captive there had been through extreme misery. This is because Azkaban had become a spawning ground for Harry Potter's dementors. These dark beings were not bred nor born. Instead, they spawned directly from the misery that had built up in the air. Since Azkaban had been infested with dementors, it had seemed to be unusable.
