Tobias Santelmann's Harry and Ellen Helinder's Beate squatting and looking at a dead body in Jo Nesbø's Detective Hole
Netflix has found their next crime novel franchise adaptation with Jo Nesbø's Detective Hole, and the author is explaining his approach to tackling his source material. The iconic Norwegian detective was previously adapted for the screen with Michael Fassbender's The Snowman, which became an infamous critical and commercial disaster.
The new series stars Tobias Santelmann as Harry, who is still grappling with the unsolved case of a string of vicious bank robberies from five years prior, while also now investigating a serial killer in Oslo leaving pentagram-shaped gems at each crime scene. Ahead of the show's premiere, ScreenRant's Grant Hermanns interviewed Jo Nesbø to discuss Detective Hole. When asked about choosing The Devil's Star as being the key novel to adapt from his 13-book franchise, the author/creator found it to be a"quite easy" decision, as the fifth book was where"the character, the universe and the people around Harry came together and formed a coherent place" for the eponymous detective. He further explained that, for his readers, The Devil's Star was"such an important part of the story" for the wider Harry Hole universe, as it"gives you the sense of place and time." Even more of a reason why the fifth book was a perfect starting place for Detective Hole is that it's a"story so well within the frame of the genre of the hardboiled detective story and whodunit mystery," giving him just enough room to also pull from the previous two novels for the story. Nesbø follows in the footsteps of fellow crime novelist Michael Connelly, whose Bosch novels he has previously cited as a key inspiration for Harry Hole, by adapting his own work for the screen with Detective Hole. Interestingly, Nesbø electing to adapt the key elements of his third, fourth and fifth novels proves a closer grouping of stories than Prime Video's Bosch series, whose seasons would sometimes adapt installments double digits apart from each other within the same season. With The Devil's Star and its predecessor Nemesis largely getting rolled into Detective Hole, the question now becomes how Nesbø will expand the show if it gets renewed for another season. The main plot threads of the aforementioned books get their respective closure by the end of the Netflix series, though the crux of the third book, The Redbreast, was barely touched upon. However, given its plot explored neo-Nazism, the author/creator may elect to avoid the sensitive subject. At the same time, Nesbø has 10 other released books in the Harry Hole series to turn to continue Detective Hole should Netflix renew it. At the time of writing, the show is still in its premiere weekend, and as such no viewership data has been shared for it by the streamer. However, it's already off to a strong start with critics, currently holding a rare perfect 100% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Should audiences get just as hooked on the series, Netflix could look to replicate Prime Video's success with Bosch. Considering the series is already largely set in Norway and has established roots for the character in the country, it does seem unlikely that a Detective Hole season 2 would adapt some of the later novels, in which Harry is not living in Oslo. Given where the season leaves off with Harry and his relationship with Rakel and Oleg, however, the next season could adapt the ninth novel, Phantom, in which the detective returns to the country in order to investigate when the latter is arrested for murder. Posts By Grant Hermanns What will also be interesting to see is, if he's given enough seasons to eventually come around to it, Nesbø will try and re-adapt The Snowman in Detective Hole. The 2017 film went through an infamously rushed production to the point of not shooting much of its script, and therefore source material, giving the author/creator the chance to redeem its story. However, considering the now-troublesome legacy of the novel internationally after Fassbender's movie, he may wait to give it another shot.
